Scientific studies on Iranian rangelands began in 1960; research activities of Iranian rangelands first started at Homand Abrsard research stations in the semi-steppe, Nodehak Qazvin and Rudshur rangelands in steppe regions, and developed throughout the country after 1981.
The direct and indirect dependence of the country's development plans to the natural resources (water, soil and plants) in various fields, including agriculture, industry, services, etc., is clear. In Iran, the area of 86 million hectares that covers more than 52 percent of the country's land area is covered by rangelands.
Regarding the vastness of rangelands, climate diversity, diversity of farming systems and livestock breeds that use rangelands, To take any effective action, having a targeted program to increase resource productivity is essential. Hence, rangeland research division has developed its strategic plan to address this issue. And put it the basis of its operational planning. In addition to expressing and explaining strategies in this program, the organization of work based on ecological principles has been predicted to cover all ecological areas of the country.
